Meredith Baxter was born to Tom Baxter and Whitney Blake in California in the year 1947. She was in her early 20s when she kicked off her acting career. Though she is mostly known as an actress, she is also a film director. She had earlier studied at the Hollywood High School and Interlochen Center for Arts. She is the stepdaughter of the late American producer and comedy writer Allan Manings.
